Johnson Controls Federal Systems/Versar, LLC (JCFS/V) completed an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funded solar energy project at the Spotswood W. Robinson III and Robert R. Merhige, Jr. United States Courthouse in Richmond, Virginia.
The courthouse was opened in 2008 and is situated in downtown Richmond taking up an entire city block. The front entrance was located on the main east-west route thru town. Bounded on the east by historic St. Peter’s Catholic Church (built in 1830’s) and. St. Paul's Episcopal Church (built in 1840’s) and to the west by the historic Carpenter Theatre.
Versar provided the design and installation of a 115 kW DC Photovoltaic (PV) roof system, the largest in the state. The installed photovoltaic system, which converts solar energy into electricity, is a 507-solar panel system spanning 21,000 sq. ft. and covers a substantial portion of the roof. Since its final completion in January 2011, the PV system has produced over 41MWh of power, or the environmental equivalent of planting 544 trees.
