Naval Training Range
NAVFAC, Puerto Rico
The eastern end of Vieques was developed as a training range as part of the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility. The Vieques Naval Training Range (VNTR) was created in 1965 for use in naval gun fire support training and air-to-ground ordnance delivery training for Atlantic Fleet ships, NATO ships, air wings, and smaller air units from other allied nations and the Puerto Rico National Guard. Following closure of the VNTR in 2003, the range complex was subsequently transferred to the USDOI and is currently managed by the USFWS as a wildlife refuge. Although access to the former range areas is restricted, the primary goal of the restoration program at VNTR is to reduce risks to human health and the environment posed by MEC where trespassing frequently occurs.
