Architectural Surveys and Inventories
Survey and inventory of buildings, structures, districts, sites, and objects
begin with archival research, which can include the review of historical maps, cultural resource and
planning documents, property records, and building plans and drawings.
Fieldwork is conducted to ensure resources are recorded to SHPO survey standards. During this process,
exteriors of individual resources are inspected to obtain information noting architectural features and
historic integrity sufficient to complete required documentation, such as SHPO survey forms. Interior
features can likewise be inspected and evaluated if accessible and required. Resources are also
photodocumented using digital or traditional 35mm black-and-white photography with subject views, noting
building elevation and distinctive features.
