Archaeology > Evaluation
PHASE II EVALUATION Evaluation studies require a more intensive level of effort to
determine the significance of a site in the context of specific criteria established for inclusion in the
National Register of Historic Places.
Typically, site boundaries are precisely defined, and square or rectangular test units are excavated in strategic locations throughout the site to provide a more detailed view of sediment profiles, artifact contexts, and artifact distributions. This information allows the archaeologists to make accurate interpretations as to the age and significance of the site. Detailed mapping plays a critical role in investigating the site. Base maps are a fundamental part of site documentation, supplementing excavations by placing site elements in spatial context.
