PHASE III MITIGATION

Mitigation or data recovery studies may be conducted on certain archaeological sites that are determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. These studies are designed to retrieve significant archaeological sites that cannot be avoided by development impact.

A variety of procedures are available for use in mitigation studies depending on the type and complexity of the site and the research questions that are to be addressed.

For example, open area or block excavations provide information about contiguous areas within the site. Multi-disciplinary approaches may be conducted employing a wide range of technical and analytical techniques.

Alternative mitigation strategies may also be considered suitable when a site cannot be excavated. Such approaches are determined in consultation with the appropriate state historic preservation office.
