Archaeology > Survey
PHASE I SURVEY Survey level studies are designed to rapidly identify the presence or absence of
archaeological resources within a project area and to make preliminary assessments of the need for further
investigation. The work may consist of surface reconnaissance, subsurface testing, or a combination of both
procedures.
Pedestrian reconnaissance or walkover survey is conducted on systematic, often overlapping transects. Walkover survey can be more efficient than subsurface testing, but requires adequate ground surface visibility to be fully effective. Subsurface testing involves the excavation of shovel tests, usually placed on a systematic grid across the survey area.
